Tribute Blackout

Hello Lovelies...These past few days have been very dark and gloomy. As a fellow CT blogger, it deeply saddened me to hear of such a hideous crime happening in my own home state. What made it worst is that many of my own friend's children attended the school. Thankfully, they came from the day unharmed--at least physically, but some of the children they know have not. I never thought that I would feel the need to run to my own child so badly, to hold her and squeeze her close. I am so blessed to have my child and though we are not Newtown residents, my heart is deeply hurt for the children and their families.

This week for me is a time of reflection, appreciation, and a time of mourning for those who were taken from us too soon. In honor of the sweet angels who are no longer with us I have decided not to post this past week and will continue not to post until after Christmas.

I hope that you understand and join me in this time to honor those lives that have been taken from us too soon. This Christmas, please remember that it is not the gifts and presents to be cherished, but the family, friends, close bonds and life. I wish you all many blessings and happiness with the ones you love and I encourage you to cherish the time that you have now as I know that I will aim to cherish every minute of mine.

With that said I continue my tribute blackout...

Statement Layers

Hello Lovelies!! Today I wanted to have a little fun with necklace layering. There is something so fun about being able to layer up your favorite pieces to create a knockout, statement necklace. Recently I bought this cream/gold necklace and have been thinking of different ways I could wear it. One thing I learned in layering necklaces is to stick to a similar pallet and to play with length. Since the Geo-styled necklace is already a chunky statement on its own, I wanted to add a bit more color to the mix. So I looked through my collection of jewels and found this multi-colored beaut.

A while back I purchased this multi-colored necklace from Forever21 and wore it once, maybe twice. I just felt like it was pretty, but not a big enough statement. Once I paired it with my newest necklace, I knew it was a match made in necklace layering heaven!

The green, pink, and purple thread of the choker popped against the crisp cream, enhancing the already popping gold on both. It was a pairing that needed to be put on display for all to see so I chose to match it up with one of my favorite thrift finds. You may recall seeing this vest (with sleeves) in my last Thrift-Ten Fix. I have to admit, this thing is such a staple in my closet. I have practically worn this every week and if I could would probably wear it everyday. It is great for layering as seen in my outfit of the day.

Keeping the rest of the outfit simple so the necklace would be the star, I decided to wear my oh so loved long sleeved T-shirt from the BCBG outlet store by my house.  This t-shirt is so fun and gets A LOT of use. I love the details of the high in the front, low in the back hem and the sheer "feathering" along the top half of the sleeves and chest is outright haute! Just make sure to wear a camisole under it or the A-Hem, ladies will be waving hi!

To add a bit more texture, I threw on my faux leather leggings c/o YummieLife and my old boots from Target (which I bought on clearance!). They are by far the best leggings I have ever had and the faux leather look takes them from ordinary to extraordinary.

I think layering is my new favorite way to wear my necklaces. It's an easy way to make a statement out of the quieter pieces in your jewelry box. How would you style your layered necklaces?

Everyday Holiday Sparkle

Hello Lovelies! Have you started your holiday shopping yet? I have...well technically it's for myself, but that counts right? Okay, okay, I know I need to get going on buying gifts for people on my list, but hey a girl can treat herself too during the process right?

Yesterday during my lunch break at work, I decided to take a little walk to my local Forever21. Now I have to admit, it is DANGEROUS having a mall right across the street from my office, so much so that I can easily shop til I drop--or at least until my lunch hour is over. Any who I was in dire need of a walk so hey, what better time than to knock out two birds with one stone--stretch out my legs and shop for something new and sparkly. :)

I knew I wanted necklaces that had some holiday sparkle to jazz up my outfits, but I didn't want the typical screaming "Ho, Ho, Ho" accessories. So I decided to go with necklaces that had gold accents since gold to me speaks festive this time of year.

The first necklace I picked up was this Geo-styled bib necklace. The crescent shape is great under collars and I love the cream against the gold. It is available in black and gold as well--which is a trend combination right now--but I felt that the cream would be more versatile in my wardrobe with lighter colors. I do plan on getting the black and gold one eventually though since I like the cream one so much.

As with just about all their jewelry I love their prices. This statement piece was a great deal at $8.80. Not bad for a necklace that can be worn with so many options.

The next piece I purchased was this stunning Duo-Tone Bead necklace. Love how I styled her into a little tree? I couldn't resist TEE-HEE!

I wasn't convinced at first that I would like this necklace because it looked too simple, but once I put it up to my neck it sparkled...literally. The gold/grey duo-tone of this necklace catches so much light. It doesn't seem like it, but it really does spark a sense of glitz in a simple way. It is perfect for layering with other necklaces of a similar feat. You could even buy more of them and layer them up together to create an even bigger duo-tone impact--I just might have to do that.

This simple but glitzy necklace also comes in at the great price of $8.80. Even if you don't purchase it for yourself, it would be a great gift for someone special say your friend, sister, split personality named Sandra...shhhh Sandra, no one is supposed to know about you. Okay, where was I?

Taking some inspiration from one of my favorite blogger's post at ThirtySomethingFashion, I decided to pair these necklaces with mint-green and red. Please excuse the mess behind me...and my spotty mirror. *Sigh* With the neutral black pants and over the knee boots I think this outfit was a success. It said holiday without screaming "Santa's Coming to Town!!"

What are your holiday go to's this season? Have you found any stylish compliments that have been putting you in the holiday spirit?

Thrift-Ten Fix

Hello Lovelies!! I hope you are having a great weekend. So it dawned on me that I didn't share with you my great thrift finds before I went on my cruise last month. Naughty me. I hope I still get something good for Christmas :)

A week before my cruise I decided to stop by my local Goodwill to see if I could find something to wear on my cruise. Of course I was open minded to whatever I could layer with for the fall/winter and wanted to make sure it wasn't just for the cruise--basically a one time deal. You know those purchases, the ones you buy for a specific event and never wear again. Yeah, I had my share.

As I walked into the Goodwill I reminded myself that I needed to stick to my $10 budget. If I only found one thing then so be it. As long as it was something that I truly loved and would get a lot of use out of. That wonderful Saturday I entered into a smorgasbord of goodies because the lucky color was green...and most of the things I bought were marked with a green tag!! BINGO!!! I couldn't believe my luck! Here are my great finds...

Find #1

Ever since I saw one of my favorite bloggers I follow feature an old navy cargo twill vest in this post and many other outfits, I thought I just had to buy one. Just my luck, the vest is sold out and another one similar to it is not what I want to spend for it. So when I saw this beauty in the Goodwill with a green tag on it, I snatched it up fast than you could say cargo vest! LOL!!

The color of it is definitely a brighter green, but I actually like it better. The sleeves could easily be cut of and made into an actual vest, but for now I think the sleeves are working. This vest could easily be layered over shirts and under cardigans. The options are endless!! This amazing find was originally $3.99, but I got this bad boy at half off for $2.00!! I know right!

Find #2

This Forever21 tunic was a great find for my cruise. The floral print was girlie and fun with pinks, greens, and blues. It's lightweight fabric made it perfect as a bathing suit cover-up for my vacation--which I did wear here. Not to mention it's great for layering in the colder season as well!

Immediately for the colder season I could see myself layering this with a cream long-sleeved turtle neck with my first great find, the green cargo vest over leggings and tall brown boots or booties. A statement necklace and gold watch would set it off! This great find was originally $3.99, but because it had a green tag the price came to $2.00!!

Find #3

I love pleated skirts. No, let me rephrase that. I LOVE pleated skirts. Yup, that sounds better! There is something about a pleated skirt that makes me feel so feminine and classic. When I saw this red pleated skirt I had to touch it, try it on, twirl a bit. Yup, she was mine from the get go!

The fabric of the skirt is a wool/polyester blend so it was perfect for the Fall/Winter. It's not scratchy on the skin and the color is nice and bright. With tights and a long sleeved body-con dress used as a shirt, it became my birthday outfit. Red, black and white are such classic colors. Since I haven't found the perfect red lipstick yet, a red pleated skirt will do the trick! This pleated steal did not have a green tag on it, but at a price of $5.00 I was all in!!

For my birthday, I also paired it with my black and white houndstooth scarf and my great find I purchased on my vacation. Throughout the cruise, they had sales every night on accessories for the formal nights and casual nights. On the first formal night I rummaged through their jewelry selection and found this beauty at the great steal of $10! Now that's what I call a Cruise-Ten Fix!!

My total amount for my Thrift-Ten Fix pre-cruise came to the great price of $9! Okay so it was a few cents under $10 when you include tax, but I still stuck to my game plan and budget!!

You know this challenge is starting to prove to me that I can still enjoy the fruits of shopping with a small amount to spend. Everyone needs a reminder sometimes that great finds are out there and you don't need to spend a lot for them.

So what do you think? Would you wear these finds and have you found any great steals lately? Do tell!!

Thrift-Ten Fix

Hello Lovelies! Today is the first installment of my Thrift-Ten Fix series! I know it took me a while to get started and I'm sorry you had to wait so long. I am so excited to share with you the great finds that I discovered and since this is the beginning of my weekly series, I decided to include a two-fer. So, I will be sharing with you the great finds I found at my local thrift shop via my $10 challenge as well as an extra special purchase I made at a local vintage market. Let's kick this off with a bang shall we? Are you ready? Great! Let's start with my Thrift-Ten Fix find!

After much deliberation, I decided to start my first Thrift-Ten Fix challenge at a recent thrift shop I discovered called Savers. I was a little worried at first because I thought I wouldn't be able to do it, but to my surprise I was able to stick to my plan, at least close to it. Needless to say I did go $1.00 over my first time, but I like to think that the extra $1 for my first challenge was understandable. I mean I just needed to get this dress--you'll see what I mean. Overall, I was very pleased with my buys. My total finds tallied two which I thought wasn't bad for my first go round.

My first pick was this blue and floral print dress. At first glance it doesn't look like much, practically like it is going to fit like a potato sack on. If there is one thing that I've learned in styling, you never know how it looks until you try it on. This was true for the dress. It didn't look very flattering on the hanger, but once I tried it on I was in love.

The "brushed" floral print reminds me of a pretty watercolor painting. Come to think of it, the colors of the dress remind me a lot of the dress I spoke about here. The movement of the "brushed" print gives it interest without looking busy and the tones are neutral enough to blend with many things in my wardrobe. I love that there is a hidden zipper in the back and the neckline has a very slight drape. I envision wearing this dress alone with some nude pumps, a gold belt to cinch in the waist and a statement necklace. It also could be worn as a skirt with a chunky knit sweater over it and boots. Even a blazer or denim jacket would play well with it. Find Price: $5.99

My next pick was this draped style vest. I am always on the lookout for soft cotton vests that I can layer over shirts and dresses. This vest in particular was perfect because it had the right about of drape in the front and was light enough that I could layer it and not feel weighed down.

I would wear this vest with a graphic white t-shirt, skinny jeans and a pair of booties. It also would look great over a long sleeved body-con dress with a cute pair of flats.  Find Price: $4.99

Now on to my fabulous vintage find! A few weeks back I stopped by a local vintage and antique emporium a couple towns over from mine. I wasn't sure what I would find, but I was hoping that an interesting piece of jewelry was in my forecast. Some of the tables did sell jewelry and some sold furniture, but it was one booth that really caught my attention.

Organizing her delicate vintage scarves in individual zip lock baggies, a white haired woman smiled at me and gestured me toward her. She showed me her hats and purses collected over the years and explained how she maintains them in such great condition. Standing next to her table was a metal clothing rack on wheels. Hanging on wooden hangers were a variety of vintage coats from a classic khaki trench to a vibrant red cape. The options at her booth were endless and I was intrigued by it. I rummaged through the rack unsure of what I would find, but then I felt it. The delicate, fluffy warmth of none other than a gorgeous faux fur vest.

Immediately I slipped my arms into it, embracing it in each hand as I gently "pet" the sleeveless wonder. The vest was insanely warm on the chilly day over my long sleeved sweater, but it felt so amazing I didn't want to take it off. Of course I had to remove it to see the price which I anticipated would be far out of my reach. To my surprise the safety pinned tag was marked with the fabulous price of $25.00!! I couldn't believe it! For a mere $25 this big, fluffy vest that I was drooling over would be mine!! So I clicked my heels, reached in my wallet, and handed over my loot to the sweet lady. In return I received a vest that is a timeless cold weather staple and a check off of my wardrobe wish list.

So there you have it. The first installment of my Thrift-Ten Fix series. I hope you enjoyed my thrift and vintage finds and stay tuned for another Thrift-Ten Fix post next week. As always, thank you so much for reading and let me know what you're latest find was. Have you had any good thrift runs lately?

Thankful for a Path to Peace

Hello Lovelies! I hope you had a very yummy Thanksgiving! Did you eat a lot of food? I know I did! Turkey, green bean casserole, sweet potato bake, homemade rolls,...yeah I totally pigged out! Of course I made sure to wear my loose fitted clothes so I could stretch out. Okay more like my stomach could stretch out with ease. :)

Thanksgiving for me is always a time of reflection. It is a day of appreciation and understanding that nothing is owed to us. That each day is a gift and that each moment in our lives is a blessing. As a woman, I am thankful for the many opportunities I can partake in. That I can freely wear, say, do, and be whatever I want. There are no boundaries except the ones I place for myself. Individuality is welcome by all. As a mother, I am thankful for the life and love of my mini me whom I get to kiss and hold everyday. Being woken up every morning to bright eyes and a beaming smile shouting at me "I want milk!" These little moments I find to be so meaningful and yet so many women are denied them.

Recently I received a handmade basket courtesy of Macy's Rwanda Path to Peace project via the Everywhere Society. The Rwanda Path to Peace project evolves around creating a source of sustainable living for Rwandan women. Many of the women have lost their friends and families to genocide and ethnic cleansing, resulting in emotional wounds and hopelessness in a country that at times considers women to be second-rate.

To help cope with their loss of loved ones, these women turned to their deep rooted tradition of basket weaving, creating unique works of art to build up their communities. Through the establishment of Macy's Path to Peace Project, these baskets have become a positive source of income, impacting many lives. Each basket sold has helped to restore the hopes, dreams, and pride of these great women as well as touched others around the world who have purchased them. It continues to be a healing journey for the communities, but through focus on trade and not aid, the Rwanda Path to Peace project is placing the power of opportunity into the hands of the women of Rwanda.

As a mother, a woman, a sister, a daughter it saddens me to hear stories of the lost of loved ones. Of course I am thankful for the things that I have like my ever growing wardrobe and shoe collection, but there is more in this world to be thankful for than the oh so sparkly. For me this basket represents more than just a pretty artwork on my wall. It symbolizes that each thread and weave as the binding force of a family and the importance of tradition in our lives.

I am thankful for my family, friends, and of course my readers. I am also thankful for the reminder to appreciate the precious things in life that are not easily replaced. In being stylish it is important to step outside ourselves to see the bigger picture. This basket has done that for me.

Disclosure: I received a basket from Everywhere Network to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received no other compensation for this post.

Think Pink + a Giveaway Wink! - CLOSED

Hello Lovelies! So, I am sure you may have seen a lot of pink around last month. It was "painted" on websites, in stores, even on the delicious looking football players' uniforms in the NFL.....ZOWIE!!!.....excuse me while I wipe the drool from my mouth. The sweet, girly shade you saw all around was non other than a sign that Breast Cancer Awareness Month was well underway.

Throughout the month, many companies and brands offered lots of products to help promote awareness and show their support. In purchasing one of those items you would not only be getting a fabulous piece or product for yourself, a percentage if not all of the proceeds of the cost would go to the breast cancer foundation of the seller's choice. I think that's a win, win situation don't you? There were so many goodies out there I loved and wanted to purchase to help show my support, but I had to narrow it down to my favorites.

Think Pink

I loved that the brands and companies were putting a twist on their products. From Bloomingale's "little pink bag" to Movado's signature design available in pink, there were so many great selections to buy in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Needless to say October had me tickled pink (sorry, I couldn't help myself), so much so that I decided to hold a little "pink ribbon" giveaway of my own. I put together a little goodie box of sweet pink items that I hope you would find fun and just out right girlie.
